Day 10: List 5 things you like about July and 5 things you dislike

July

I have a feeling this is another which will be harder than it seems but here goes…

5 things I like about July..

1)  My American friends get to celebrate 4th of July which means they get to spend time with their loved ones and families which makes me happy because it makes them happy.

2)  Its the Huddersfield Carnival, the weather always seems to be good for this and it is always a great afternoon.

3)  Its my Grandma’s birthday, she will be 89 later this month.

4)  I love July when we get the weather we are supposed to have which means the sun is shining and everything is bright and sunny.

5) Being able to go for long walks and sit in a field in the sun

Now 5 things I dislike about July

1)  the weather we usually have which other than one or two nice days has demonstrated British Summer at its worst the last few years with rain rain and more rain.

2)  The start of the school holiday, I don;t begrudge teachers the break but as a working parent it does mean 6 weeks of headache

3) The constant drone of lawnmowers

4) It being too hot to sleep at night.

5) The bugs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Stories and Lists July Blog Challenge 2013 – Day 1: Write your own imaginary obituary, can be anything you want

Greetings all am sat here trying to type with very sore arms, yesterday I went to Birmingham to watch the IAAF Diamond League meeting I had a fantastic day but did something silly.  It was raining here in Huddersfield when I left so I did not think to actually stick sun cream in my bag, on arrival in Birmingham the sun came out and guess who got burnt arms and chest? Yup me!  Lesson learnt but I can honestly say I had such a brilliant day I didn’t care.  I took hundreds of pictures which will be going up on my FB page when I finish sorting them out so please pop over later and take a look but before todays challenge question a quick picture of the guy who without doubt got the biggest cheer of the day – yes Mighty Mo was there.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERANow onto today’s question

Day 1: Write your own imaginary obituary, can be anything you want

Remember this is a fiction lol –

Peacefully at home aged 104 the renowned author Paula Acton was committed to her cyrogenic-chamber surrounded by her family.  The author best known for her Queen of Ages saga which has been serialised in film and her tireless charity work leaves behind two children and 100 dogs whom are now believed to be being cared for by and army of lawyers who are preparing to pursue claims for the animals support from her 50 billion pound estate.

Day 11 – A song that reminds you of summer

Hmmm songs that remind me of summer, which summer is the real question? Every summer tends to have a song that no matter where you go you hear it belting out. I am going to try to avoid those as they make me think of a time rather than summer as a concept so the first one is bright bubbly and makes me smile you can imagine the sun shining and all well with the world despite the drab video…

The other makes me think of summer evenings the idea of snuggling up on a beach with the one you love and watching the sun go down.

Writing Exercise #1

This is taken from above posted book, now obviously I cannot post the chapter which goes along with the exercise nor am I going to print every exercise in the book am pretty sure the author would not be happy with that.   The idea here is every other week opposite my vlog post I shall look at an exercise in this or one of the other books I seem to be accumulating and give you my thoughts on how that particular book is helping me so for todays exercise I have chosen this one as with the new year approaching I quite like the idea of this…

Now I confess I haven’t actually done this one but it ties in with a blog post a read recently over at One Handed Writers, they were discussing how they had a scent for each of their characters in their minds as they wrote about them and I think that is part of what I get from this idea.

To me this is not so much a five minute exercise as an on going project so what I intend to do is grab a nice new clean notebook and divide it up into the senses then actually make notes of various sensations.  I guess it will be a little like saying something tastes like chicken then trying to explain to someone who has never eaten it what chicken tastes like.  I think something I am guilty of at times is assuming that people share my experience of things a prime example is if I were to talk about the smell of a fire burning, my fires when I burn them tend to have a lot of rose wood in them where I have hacked back the wild rose that grows in my garden yet I know if I were burning pine boughs it would smell differently.  I can really see how this one will help me create more layers to my writing and especially my poetry and the idea of starting a sensory journal is quite exciting.  So what do you think is this something that could work for you?

Creative Cloudwatching

Recently I have been listening to a backlog of podcasts from the World Book Club on my Ipod.  I listen to authors discuss their weighty award-winning tomes, to where their ideas came from and how their characters developed.  And I have begun to reach a conclusion…

While the situations we can place our characters in is endless in the permutations we can devise, there are very few truly original characters out there anymore.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA Now you may be wondering how this relates to the title but I really do believe from the readers point of view characters are a little like clouds.

When you cloud watch you lay, preferably on a sunny day in a warm meadow, and gaze up at the sky picking out shapes and pictures in the cloud formations.  There is of course never really a castle in the sky or a wild horse galloping or any of the million other potential things our minds create from the mix of shadow and light.

I believe the same is true of our characters, OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAregardless of the subtle nuances we may give them to try to make them individual the reader will take those same details and apply them in relation to someone of their own acquaintance to shape their image of your character.  On top of this the majority of reader bring to each new book a wealth of prior knowledge which they use whether knowingly or not to compare and contrast.OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

As someone who occasionally indulges in a little Chick Lit I know I look out for the classical plot lines be it Pride & Prejudice, Emma or Jane Eyre, then I compare the heroines.  I do not mean to in fact until recently I did not even realise that I did it, but I find myself categorising them into Miss Bennett’s, Miss Dashwood’s or Miss Woodhouse’s.

And if I am honest having recognised this I realised that I do the same in other genre’s.  If I am reading horror I use Bram Stoker and Anne Rice as my frame of reference, for every genre each reader has favourite writers which shape their taste and the way they read books.

This is not necessarily a bad thing despite the negative way in which I have approached this the reader is able to engage with the characters quicker if they can recognise the basic characteristics.  It also allows you to lead the reader to think they know how a character will behave then with a puff of wind you can blow their shape in such a way as to leave the reader breathless, or stunned.   Ultimately we cannot control exactly how the reader will view our creation only give them the outline that will hopefully guide them in the direction we ourselves see our characters heading.

But let’s be honest the world would be a far more boring place and the options for discussion so much more limited if while laying looking up at the clouds we all saw the saw castles in the sky.

Terrible Tuesday

Well today it is dark, grey and very wet here in Huddersfield.  I just got a soaking heading to the post office so I am curled up on the bed watching the worst Amityville based film I think I have ever watched. Just incase you see it in the store and are tempted like I was it is this one…

It is so bad it will not even be getting a review I am about half an hour in and actually hoping this annoying family get killed very soon.  Infact if I wasn’t so comfy I would get up and change the DVD over.

I am working to schedule posts for the week I will be in hospital, it would be so easy to cheat and schedule a week of reblogs or youtube clips but so far am doing okay at filling the posts.

I know some of you will have been expecting a Udolpho post today but the reality is both MsKatykins and I are having hectic real lives at the minute soooo If MsKatykins agrees I think that our reviews my take a break until after my surgery.

Okay I really need to change this film it is doing my head in think of a mix between the Blair Witch style of filming and a b-horror movie and you just about have it throw in annoying characters and you are there.

Hope your tuesday goes better than mine started.

Cranky

Today I am cranky!  There are no more fitting words to describe my mood.  My cold which knocked me out last week still lurks doing just enough to be annoying without me actually being ill.  My little boy has decided 6 am is the perfect time to use mummy’s bed as a trampoline.  The puppy thinks he is a cat and that he should be allowed to lay on the windowsill despite the fact each time he does it he pulls the curtain rail down.  And to top it all off I had to have blood taken for some tests today.  I am not a wimp honest but my pathetic veins ensure this process is always stressful and quite often painful.  Right now the monster and I along with the two dogs are piled on my bed watching Alice in Wonderland.

I can’t help wondering what I would find down my rabbit hole should I choose to fall into it.  I certainly today can’t see it being full of fluffy white rabbits, even on a good day I have a fear of them.  My sister had one trained to attack me I jest not, my left hand still bears the scar of trying to feed the brute when she went on holiday once thirty years ago.  I have a feeling there would be dogs, but they would probably ignore what I say aswell.

I would like to think there would be wolves, not those of Disney myth big and bad but fiercely loyal pack animals, and of course as its my rabbit hole they would accept me completely.  I think most of the beasts down my rabbit hole would be mythical, a world of unicorns, griffins and of course dragons.  It would be a land of woodland glades, meadows and abandoned castles. Though today there would be dark clouds and thunderstorms in my rabbit hole most days would be sun filled, and I would lay basking in the grass as the sun beat down upon me.

Now the question is what lurks down your rabbit hole?

Busy Weekend

Hello everyone and greetings from my new workspace, it isn’t quite finished yet but hopefully before tonight it will be and once I get it set up fully pics will follow.

The weather has been lovely here this weekend and I have sadly neglected you but am sure you will forgive me as between work, and tidying up I have been to see daughters new flat, eaten out and been to watch the rugby.  It was also great Olympic gold medalist Ed Clancy was there showing off his medals.

I am tempted to sit here now and play at my new desk but half the bedroom is still piled up across the other side of the room so for now I shall leave you with some photos I took at rugby yesterday my first attempt at catching live sporting action with my camera and given how far back we  were sat am fairly happy with the results although I should point out the final score was Giants 48 – Rhinos 24 but my battery died right at the end of the match.
