E is for Exits

20130210-230657Okay we all know no matter how popular characters are or how successful a series is that it cannot continue without the cast of characters being altered every now and again.  As writers we kill off characters we love, we may even grieve for them a little, others we celebrate freeing ourselves from, but what ever the emotion every exit evokes some sort of feeling or should.

I thought it might be fun to look at some exits which have stuck in my mind over the years, first Kim Tate leaving Emmerdale many years ago when I actually watched soaps occasionally, this clip is a little long but is the perfect way for a bitch to leave the door open for a return at a later date.

Another soap exit and this was possible the first time I remember seeing someone die of an illness, not that it was the first time obviously just the first one that sticks in my mind previous to this one I recall people dying of old age or being murdered but not the result of disease.

Sometimes it is the actor rather than the character who wishes to leave, the most fascinating way of dealing with this was Doctor Who when original Doctor William Hartnell was forced to give up the role because of ill health, the BBC not wanting to give up on its new hit programme needed a radical solution and hey presto regeneration was invented, these days many shows just swap actors and automatically assume the viewer will accept the face change.

The final clip is even more extreme it is what can be resorted to when you decide to end a show but decide to leave the slightest of cracks open for creative writing to create and elaborate get out clause.

I could keep going after all there are many memorable ends that could be discussed I never even started with the happy endings but then they never make quite the same impression… what’s your favourite exit?

D is for Dancing

20130210-230657Come on hands up who thought D would be for Duran Duran or Doctor Who, go on confess I know you did lol.

To be fair both of the afore mentioned D’s have caused me to do the D in the title on more than one occasion.  I thought I would do some thing I little different today..

Take my hand and lead me to the dancefloor

It doesn’t matter what dance we do,

A whimsical, whirling waltz

Or a raunchy, racy rumba.

A flighty, flirty foxtrot.

Or sizzling, sexy samba

As long as we dance to the same beat

The tempo does not matter.

A tempestuous, tawdry, tango

Or a quaint, quirky quickstep

Or a steamy, sensual salsa

Just keep the music going

All night long

C is For Charlie

20130210-230657

How could C stand for anything else than our little hero who has changed so many lives around the world.  I know many of your here followed Charlie’s journey with me and so wish it had had a different outcome.  It requires strength to create something positive from such tragic circumstances and that strength overflows in Charlie’s family.

They are in the process of registering Cords4LifeUk as an official charity and continue to fundraise to help promote the benefits of cord donation, I know by now all my UK followers will have signed the petition by clicking on the picture of Charlie at the side of this page but if you have a friend or two who you think would sign, share the link with them. I asked Joey Beard, Charlie’s dad what all the support has meant to them.

“1st of all thank u for doing it ……. The support we have received has been amazing and has really helped us as a family through a very difficult time”  Joey Beard

Charlie’s mum and sister along with a couple of family friends have been in the recording studio this week and have released a 6 track EP to raise funds to continue ensuring that Charlie’s Legacy becomes a reality.  Please go take a look, you can have a little listen before you buy to let you appreciate this is actually really good quality stuff.

http://rubberbandaid.bandcamp.com/   this is the link for the EP and warning when you listen to The Best Two Years have your tissues ready this was sung by Charlie’s amazing big sis Ellie and the words are truly heartbreaking yet you will find yourself smiling through the tears remembering this truly remarkable little boy taken far too soon by cancer.  I will post links at the bottom of the page for those who are new to this blog and have not read all Charlie’s story for now I will leave you with a taster which is just Kelly Worth (watch out for that name in the future) singing what has really become Charlie’s song and on the EP she sings this with his mum Fiona.

You can read more about Charlie’s journey on FB and support the family via Twitter @Cords4LifeUK

More details can be found on my interview with Claire Halliwell who set up the Cord Donation petition and on other posts here on my blog if you type Charlie into the search bar plus the lovely pic of him will take you straight to the petition if you click on it.

B is for Books

20130210-230657What else could B stand for on a writers blog.  I have to say my TBR pile continues to grow at an ridiculous rate and I have to say I blame my kindle.  Now that may seem a strange thing to say but the TBR pile on the kindle is invisible it is easy to lose track of just how many books you have one there, especially with so many freebies to be had, it is easier to put in your bag therefore the TBR pile of paper copies remains static gathering dust until an offer in the supermarket or a book by a favourite author results in purchases to increase the pile in its quest to reach the ceiling.  And if I am honest mine could actually reach it around three times and be well on its way for a fourth.

Like wise blogs fill my inbox not because I don’t like reading them but rather because I love reading what my fellow authors are doing and am constantly hitting the follow button for new people I cross paths with, there are so many interesting people that the internet allows us to connect with that we never would have met back in the days before hashtags and email.

People have questioned whether in this age of technology the old paper format of the book is doomed but I think there is certainly space for both, in our computer driven world we can meet new authors try out their work, but there will always be a place for taking down that old familiar friend from the shelf and curling up in a lovers embrace with it.

A is for Anniversary

20130210-230657I could not have timed the beginning of this challenge better if I had tried, with the beginning tying in with my anniversary of one year here at wordpress.  I had tried another blogging platform previously but it just didn’t suit me and I found it hard to find my feet and get started.  Then a Facebook friend from the US had a look around for me and came back and suggested here as the best place to fit my needs and I haven’t looked back since.

Though recently I have fallen behind in visiting blogs I know that the people I have met here understand after all most of them like myself are balancing family, jobs and writing and as much as we would love to spend hours reading it is the first thing allowed to slide when we feel overwhelmed.

I just want to take this opportunity to say a huge thank you to you the people who come back day after day and support me and give me the self belief to keep going.
