E is for Egypt – Places I Dream of Seeing

E  People that know me well will not be surprised by this selection for E on our places I dream of visiting but I can imagine a few scratching their heads and saying ‘well it’s not that much to go to Egypt these days.’  The problem is the type of holiday I would want.

These days the package holidays to Egypt consist of staying in an all inclusive resort with possibly a day trip or two thrown in but as usual I want the freedom to do more.

Of course I want to start my dream holiday off with visits to the pyramids.

Now I would love to visit not only Giza and Luxor but also the Valley of the Kings now this is actually one of the things that puts me off as well.  Sadly tourists heading to these location have increasingly become targets for terrorists and though in an ideal world this would not be an issue, in reality it is a consideration which has to be taken into account.

Surrounded by the very monuments to those who fought to create the ancient civilisation that we seek to understand and appreciate, it is difficult to accept that history and the present can clash so violently.  But then the truth is this area has always been an area of controversy.  The archaeologists that discovered many of the tombs did take artefacts out of the country but many more were sold on the black market by grave robbers over the hundreds of years since the tombs were created.  The very tombs themselves have brought large amounts of money into the country but as so often with tourism the money does not filter down to the majority of the people living in poverty.Egypt-banner

Cairo is now a modern metropolis full of high rise buildings and neon lights a compete contrast to those ancient tombs laying amongst the sand and I would love to visit there as well but really only for one reason.

The Museum!

While many artefacts are still spread round the world the museum in Cairo is beginning to lead the way in the scientific study of mummies and the history of it Pharaohs.  My dream E holiday would start here wandering amongst the exhibit gaining more of an insight to make my pyramid experience more real and allow me to put the history into a perspective that you can try to understand in your own mind.

From there I would want to travel to the pyramids the same way those ancient people did via a trip down the Nile.nile2_2821222b

Once more that houseboat I had for the Amazon could be airlifted to provide the perfect vehicle to float down the Nile (avoiding the crocodiles).  What it most sad for me is that it is not my physical limitations that prohibit this dream, even the financial aspect could be fixed if I went on a river cruise rather than my houseboat, it is the fact that it is fear of my fellow man and the way we treat each other that will probably prevent me every seeing more than the quick day trip an all inclusive resort will offer.

D is for Darwin – Places I Dream of Seeing

Darwin-nt

D This is the first of a couple of visits Down Under until a couple of years ago I actually had barely even heard of Darwin but then thanks to wonderful friends around the world on Facebook I started taking more of an interest in the places that did not automatically feature on must visit lists and Darwin was one of the places added to the places I dream of seeing.

While still having beaches to rival its Gold Coast counterpart, and of course the most amazing sunsets, it does have more to offer some of which I would be looking forward to and one which would definitely appeal to the monster.

The thing that would make this a dream holiday for the monster while giving me a nervous breakdown is this…

The monster loves Crocodiles and alligators so the chance to get up and personal would be something he would love.  And while I might enjoy the experience if I was alone the monster in such close proximity to these prehistoric predators would do my blood pressure no good at all.  I love this idea of the sunken tube you can watch them from and would love to see this in more places where they have fascinating wildlife.

The other thing that appeals to me is the huge National Park situated just outside Darwin, I really love the idea of getting to fly right over the falls and exploring the terrain from the air.

You might ask why this is a place I dream of going rather than one that I could realistically go to, well the answer is that to visit Australia is a once in a lifetime trip for most of us and if I ever got the chance I would head to my other Aussie choice coming in a few letters time.  Very few of us will ever be in a position to visit ever town or city in every country we want to go to both because of finances and time constraints.

Every journey we are lucky enough to take even to locations that we do not always appreciate are adventures for others.  I posted a Vlog this week walking round a field next to my own home and by doing so shared my experiences with you, my friends around the globe.  After yesterdays blog I had a lovely visitor here who linked back to his own visit to Cambodia which I found fascinating as well as getting just a little jealous.  The thing I would ask is if you have a quiet day take a camera out with you and film your local area, share it with others and remember what is everyday for you could be someone else’s dream place to see.

C is for Cambodia – Places I Dream of Seeing

C  My C dream location is Cambodia, a strange choice for many I know but I remember the first time I ever watch Tomb Raider and saw those fascinating ancient temples, I just had to learn more.  1-AngkorWATaerial13The temples with their jungle back drops are amazing, and the ones that visitors can actually go to are just the beginning, it is unknown exactly how many other treasures the jungle has claimed or reclaimed as one can never be sure which was there first. Angkor-cambodia-2

I would obviously need to get a lot fitter before I could contemplate hiking into the jungle in search of hidden gems and given the fact the number of temples they have found are just a fraction of the buildings the believe to be hidden then a fair bit of hiking will be required.cambodia-e1365521895541

Some of the more complete temples would take a full day of exploring to do justice to on their own and once more I would need to take an extra suitcase to carry all the batteries and memory cards (and yes I know you can’t actually put them in the suitcase these days) but these are the sort of place you want to be at sunset and sunrise I know I would sit for hours just staring at the buildings letting my imagination run wild about all the things those stones have witnessed through the years.cambodia-beauty

Of course there is more to Cambodia than just temples.  There are the lovely beaches and clear blue seas.  It is not somewhere you think of in terms of beach holidays normally but I should imagine the tourist trade will eventually transform coastline into a sea of hotels and condos.asianelephants.cambodia.568

The other attraction for me would be the wildlife, more specifically ELEPHANTS!!!

I love elephants and the chance to see them in the wild while they still exist in the wild would be awesome.  It is a tragedy that we have to even think that way in this day and age when we understand how ecosystems work that we cannot stop our fellow man wiping out integral parts of it. 14-cambodia-village

However those reasons are mainly focused around one issue, poverty. And this is another reason this holiday may for ever remain a dream.

While I would want to see people living traditionally without interference from the Western world I imagine the actually reality of seeing how they live day to day would be incredibly hard.  I know obviously already the main cities are modern but it is not just the conditions people live in but also those they live under which puts me off.  Google images of Cambodia and along side the pictures of temples you see armed police and violent protests, people laying dead in the street.  I know it is an issue with many places some others will probably appear later in the list but in an ideal world I would be there tomorrow.

Please feel free to leave your C suggestions down in comments 😀

B is for Belize – Places I Dream of Seeing

B  The place I dream of today is a tourist type location but it is the type of location that for most of us requires a lottery win before we can seriously consider it.

Belize is literally a tropical paradise and boasts the second largest reef on the planet.  This means obviously one needs to be able to scuba dive and to have had training to be able to dive in the open sea.  At the minute I can do neither and unless I wished to be confused for an Orca I would need to lose weight before donning a wetsuit to learn (I am not bothered by my weight in many ways given the reasons I have for having put it on but wetsuit material really does nothing for even the most athletic figure) though I have said before it really is something I would love to do.

The idea of swimming with the sea-life they have there would be a dream in itself, the turtles and sharks (I love sharks) but that is not all this location has to offer.

There are numerous cave locations where you can float around in pools looking up at the jungle surrounding you, I mean can you imagine anything more relaxing than being in one of those tyres just floating about.

There is one other major attraction in Belize though as well which appeals to the ancient history geek in me… the Mayan ruins.

Again I would need to get fitter before this type of trip, just look at all those steps and as this would be a once in a lifetime trip you would really want to make the most of every moment and see everything.  I would want to climb up as high as it were possible to go (lets pretend my fear of heights would not enter into this equation) I would love to look out across the tree tops and imagine the people who built these magnificent structures standing there thousands of years ago after the placed the final block.

So here you have it my second dream location which at the minute finances and fitness levels would stop it ever becoming a reality.

A is for the Amazon – Places I Dream of Seeing

A  The Amazon river passes through Colombia, Peru and Brazil on its 6,437 km journey from start to finish.  It is possible to take cruises down parts of the rives but as this A – Z is places I dream about you can imagine that my trip is not one that includes a luxury berth on a River Cruiser.  My dream is to travel the full length of the river and see and experience all it has to offer. I am not sure about trying it in a canoe but maybe a small sail boat or even a narrow-boat, in fact the narrow-boat would be perfect.

I could live on board fish from the roof in the hope of catching my supper I could then prepare in my own little kitchen.  I could lay on the roof and soak in the experience as the boards fly over head and listen to the numerous calls. I would need to ensure of course I had a big enough supply of batteries for my camera as I can imagine the hours of video footage and thousands of still photos I would take.

So as I was saying I want to travel the full length of the river and experience the wildlife including of course the famous Amazon Dolphin, which I believe is pink due to the fish it feeds on. I mean how cute is that.  I saw dolphins once previously in the wild and it was one of the most profound spiritual experiences I think I have ever had.

I know not all the wildlife will be quite so cute and the down side to such a trip would be dangerous creatures illnesses and the occasional native tribesman who may be freaked out by the sight of a narrow boat chugging along.

This is the tourist version of the trip I found which might give a taste of what I would experience in my dream…

The reality is of course this is a dream not only could I never afford to buy a narrow boat and ship it over there but I am in no shape to take on this type of trip even if money were no option. I know there are travel blogs out there who can give you far more details than my has but hopefully the locations I pick and my reasonings behind them will get you thinking about your own dream locations.

Please feel free to share your own A dream places in the comments section!

A – Z 2015

I should have done this post yesterday, I had spent several days trying to think up a theme but it just was not working, then I came up with one but children and pets refused to co-operate with my need to write the post.  By the time I finally got them all settle the most I could manage was to read a few emails and play on FB for an hour before bed.

However enough the theme for the A – Z challenge for this year will be…drumroll…

Places I Dream of Seeing!

Hopefully I can come up with a few places that will surprise you.  I will talk about why I want to go there, the chances of it ever happening and in some cases the very real reasons it is never going to happen.  These will not be your normal package holiday locations, though there may be the odd one or two that are more normal, but these will be the money no object once in a life time locations that really are the places one dreams of.

Still time for those wanting to sign up for this years challenge which you can do by clicking here

I am number 1268 this year and will of course be adding the five blogs listed after mine to my reader, one thing I am going to do is have Fridays off to Vlog rather than Sundays like everyone else but the days work out more or less the same. Right I need to go create a page now to list all my posts together on.

Are you doing A – Z this year?
