WIP Wednesday 1st May 2024

It’s Wednesday so today is a round up of what I am working on right now. I have taken on a few short stories for anthologies as I have been struggling working on longer pieces but I am hoping to get back to it this month. I have noticed that the length of the short stories is increasing from 5k as the norm to between 10 and 20k in length. This trend going forward does mean I will have to cut back how many I do in the future, which is a shame because I enjoy being pushed out of my comfort zone. The plus side is when the rights are returned I have a chunky piece of writing to expand and make full novella out of which is something I am working at right now.

This week I have two things I am working on. Firstly, I am working on finishing the story for the Books On The Beach Anthology which was inspired by the people I met at the riding school. I have to say writing young adult has been an interesting challenge, one I wasn’t convinced I would be up to but the test will be at the end of the month when I let me tester audience try it.

The second project is turning In Search Of Ghosts into a novella. I realised when I got it back that it stands at 15k words and that I could actually expand it quite easily to extend it. This was originally published as part of the Indie Love Myths & Legends anthology. The story is set in Wales and I went for the Lady Of The Lake legend for the basis of my story but it was also looking at the way people handle grief. I was in a position when I wrote it where I was worrying about losing my dad, and at the same time dealing with the fact if he lived he would forget who I was more and more.

Working on short stories is a really good way to get back into the mindset of writing every day, even if it is only 500 words. That is my plan going forward to get me back writing and to also get some work published. It will also allow me to focus on getting some of the half written projects I have on my computer finished and out into the world.

Some of the stories were great and interesting, and those were typically unfinished, which was just truly frustrating. That just ruined my enjoyment of the book.

Some people will query why I include what could be perceived as a negative review, here is the thing, that review actually praises the stories, they just wanted more. I have been guilty in the past of writing short stories where readers have told me they wanted more but in short story format you can’t always round off every single loose thread as much as you try to. the chances are if you read a story in an anthology you really love it may be reworked at a later date into a full book, or it may be part of a wider world that the author has created that you will fall in love with if you check it out. Every reader is entitled to review as they see fit, I think 2 stars is a little harsh but I choose to take the positives that is was the fact the stories were so good that left this reader frustrated but I always recommend trying things for yourself.

Whats not to love about this anthology all set around red headed beauties… i love how all authors get limited details and they all bring such a great mix of different reads, we have MC, vampire, Royals, undercover drama, second chances and the falling in love with your friends sister, all rolled into one fab set of stories.
I bought this initially for TL Wainwrights story which i absolutely LOVED! More twists, turns, and drama set around those hot YOMC bikers! Definitely want more from JB & Scarlett.
I also loved Elle M Thomas story with some forbidden bestfriends sisters romance, loved Spence and Emilia and would love to find out whats next for these guys.
RM Gardner, as much as i don’t read Royal romances i was hooked into this story 😉
This collection seriously has something for everyone, jump in and buy this asap!

A collection of short stories, all of which have a Red theme within. We have a mix of Vampyres, MC,Strippers and Gangsters, Brother’s best friend, girls night in with a ouija board, well you get the idea. This is a fabulous collection, each author has put their own take on the theme/picture that were given and have done it so well. Each tale will have you riveted and wanting more. If you fancy an opportunity to test the waters with new authors this is the way to do it. I will be honest I was drawn to this by the first story by Tracie Podger an already firm favourite for me and I got to the end of her story wishing I could have more, there is so much more to tell and I have heard a whisper that there may well be a full length book for A Blood Like Mine and in the meantime I have many new authors to explore. Grab this now and lose yourself in a world of fantasy, love and mystery, you will love it.

A great selection of short stories with a red headed heroine. There is definitely something for everyone in this anthology with fantasy, romance, vigilantes, motorcycle clubs. I particularly liked Full Disclosure by Loriana Capello, based in a club with hints of organised crime, fast paced and gripping. I also really enjoyed Book Keeper by Paula Acton with a vigilante vampire offering a safe haven to all in her Night Library and Velvet Reds by TL Wainwright which got me interested in her MC club and then was over far too soon.

There is a lot to like in this collection, and I’m sure I will be looking up more from some of these authors 🙂

Ok I’m 2 stories in, Tracie Podger and TL Wainwright’s are amazing. Interesting take on Vampires for the first one, fresh and exciting. TL went with the MC but it’s one of their businesses and the person who runs it, boy oh boy I want more of that, in fact more of both.
There is a mix of wonderful stories by some new to me authors and 3 favourite authors. Each are interesting and romantic, each contain something red, be it blood or hair colour. Great characters and a very enjoyable read.

There are some very interesting stories in this anthology. A lot is packed into these short stories and the authors managed to draw you in quickly. All the leading women have red hair and all are very different characters. There is a mixed of tropes from paranormal, romantic suspense and contemporary romance.
Some felt like they were prequels to a longer book and left me with unanswered questions. They ended in a to be continued fashion so you are left wondering what was going to happen. You will need to keep an eye out for the next book if you enjoyed the story.

A Blood Like Mine by Tracie Podger:
This is really two paranormal stories in one. The main romance is between Maxim and Lilith who are from two different clans. The author also gives us the tragic love story between Maxim’s parents, which left his father a heartbroken recluse and him without a mother. 
Maxim is part of a centuries old race of vampires but wants to find better ways to ensure their survival. His father wants him to take a partner but he has no desire for one until he is drawn by the aura of a red-headed woman in their prison. Something about her is special but he doesn’t know what she is. 
I found his friend Franco really funny and bet they have got up to some mischief together. I didn’t like his brother and could see why they didn’t get on. I don’t usually read vampire books but I found myself as interested in Lilith as Maxim was. I enjoyed finding out more about her and the history of both their clans.It turns out these two are soulmates and the next generation to fulfil a years old prophecy.

Velvet Reds by T.L. Wainwright is set in her Young Outlaws MC Nevada world. I was so excited to read this when I realised it was about Scarlett. If you have read Smoke then you will know the heartbreaking backstory about her parents. This follows on from the ending of Smoke’s book, when the Florida chapter ask for help with one of their members. While we learn all about Scarlett’s childhood and how her mother ended up at Reds. When tragedy struck, Scarlett took over from her mother to manage Velvet Reds for the YOMC and she has a secret bond with Smoke, their president. When he needs a favour, a very sexy and handsome man ends up hiding out in her apartment. JB is warned she is off limits and he promises to be on his best behaviour and resist her! JB is such a temptation and awakes a fire inside her. There is a funny shower scene and I loved how he was such a flirt. Knowing a relationship is forbidden, they both fight their feelings but a violent incident changes everything. The consequences bring revelations and heartbreak but also promises for the future which I can’t wait for. 

Full Disclosure By Loriana Cappello:
Rosa is a journalist on an undercover assignment as a choreographer for the dancers at a private members club. The Vine is owned by Matteo Rossi and brothers Michael & Roberto Lombardi, but is probably their only legitimate business. While writing her investigative piece, she had fallen in love with Matteo.There had been an immediate attraction between them since her first day but he suddenly broke up with her with no explanation. She is heartbroken but her boss demands she returns to find out the truth about the owners or get fired. Rosa knows she has fallen in love with a gangster and seen what happens behind the scenes but feels a loyalty to Matteo so needs to go back to protect him from her boss. A hurtful discovery leads to a forbidden final performance, a confrontation with Matteo and an explosive incident.
There are secrets and revelations that will leave you shocked and surprised as not everything is what it seems. Their connection is undeniable but can they find a way to be together. A very clever and enjoyable mafia romance with a great twist.

Choosing Us by R.M. Gardner:
A royal romance story about Princess Elizabeth and who she chooses to be her significant other. She has very firm ideas of what kind of Queen she wants to be. She has her own opinions and wants to lead her people into the future. The King and Queen are bound by royal protocol to find her a suitor. She has just turned twenty-one so it is a very important night for Elizabeth and her parents as they hold an extravagant ball for her to meet suitable men. Two young men catch her eye as they walk in and she is pleased when one of them asks her to dance. It turns out Marius and Dominic have a plan because from the first time they saw her, they were both fascinated and wanted her. Marius is adorable and totally irresistible. My heart went out to him as he battled his demons and we learn about what he had been through. Dom is so supportive and determined to show him he deserved to be loved. Would she be willing to make their dream come true? Could she accept them for what they were? Would their unorthodox relationship be accepted? An interesting why choose story with a sweet ending.

Book Keeper by Paula Acton :
This is not a romance story but a paranormal tale of an immortal being who has adapted so she can live amongst mortals. Vampire Cassandra is an independent woman who runs The Night Library, an exclusive members cafe. It is a sanctuary for humans and any immortals in their human form. She is called the Bookkeeper because she has a hidden library of books detailing the lives of immortals and she knows secrets about her kind and others. She is also a vigilante for women who have been victims of abusers and bad men. There are rules about interfering in mortals lives but she uses her gifts to take revenge on these men. She hands out the justice she believes they should have received. The author gives us lots of information about Cassandra and sets the scene for more plots and events that she could be involved in.I felt a little disappointed with the last chapter and the ending left me wondering what was going to happen next, so I presume this is a prequel for a full book.

Meant To Be by Elle M Thomas:
An unrequited love, soulmates, friends to lovers, forbidden love, best friend’s sister romance between Spence and Emilia. Spence Knight has just moved back to his hometown. We find out he carries a photo of a girl in his wallet. His best friends Dan Oakes and Fin Parker are so pleased he is back. Dan needs his help as his sister is getting married to an awful man. Will they stop her from marrying the wrong person or accept her decision. Emilia Oakes aka “Little Oakes” or his Acorn! He’s not seen his best friend’s sister since his graduation. It turns out the photo was taken ten years ago on her eighteenth birthday and his feelings for her have never changed. A delay at her wedding leads to a startling revelation and opens the doors for Spence to get the one woman he has always wanted. Luckily for him she has always had a crush on him.
A night out with friends ends with her drunk and him rescuing her. It leads to him helping her get her life back together and admitting his feelings for her. Things don’t go as smoothly for the couple as they have her brother to convince and it turns out Spence has been hiding a secret. Will they get their long awaited HEA? Is he the one she was destined to be with?

Girls Night In by MBB Whyte:
This is a ghost story about a group of best friends who call themselves The Strays, having a sleepover at the weekend. The four girls have vastly different personalities. are the Taylor and Hazel brainiacs. Penny is a goth girl but calls herself a freak. Jen is the typical girl next door, a cheerleader with the football boyfriend.
Armed with drinks and snacks they head to Hazel’s house. Penny and Jen are shocked to find out the house is haunted. Taylor and Hazel surprise the other girls with a spirit board and suggest they try to contact the ghost who lives in the house. A series of spooky happenings over the evening leave the girls wondering if ghosts really do exist and their imaginations running riot over what they experienced. The author also suggests there is something going on with Penny and a new boy in school and the girls make a pact about spring dance. Along with the intriguing history of Hazel’s house and the red headed ghost, I wonder if this is all leading to a full book about The Strays.

Destiny by Georgina Hannan:
A paranormal romance about Lucien, a Vampire and Calista, a Werewolf. When a mystical beast turns eighteen they must go and find their mate. Mates are destined to be together but until they actually touch and the sparks fly, they don’t know who the other is. Destiny brings them together even if the circumstances are unlikely and the pairing not what either expected. Her life changes forever on her birthday when an anonymous note tells her where to go to meet her mate. The place is outside the safety of her pack so although dangerous, her curiosity gets the better of her. At the clearing she is spooked by a group of vampires and tries to escape. Luckily Lucien saves her. He is the leader of the vampires. A intense moment between them leads to confusion and denial. They are different and can’t be mates or can they? A leadership challenge and jealousy puts them both in danger. Will they realise they have no choice, accept their destiny and survive everything to be together.

Reigniting Love by Susan Horsnell:
This is a contemporary romance about Cherise Malone and Bryden Finch. A couple torn apart by no fault of their own and now getting a second chance at love. Bryden fell in love with Cherise in college but hasn’t seen her for eight years and we are about to find out why. Merin her assistant and best friend, has helped Bryden arrange their meeting as he needs the chance to explain in person. Cherise is a singer who is returning to performing after a two year gap away.After her encore she found Merin in her dressing room with a man she thought was dead. Why had he disappeared after graduation when they were about to tell their friends they’d got engaged. He tells her the story that had changed his life for the last eight years. She was the love of his life so leaving her was the hardest thing he’d ever done.
Can she forgive him for what he did when he has struggled to forgive himself over the years? He now wants a second chance because he’s never stopped loving her. Can they reignite their love after he has broken her heart? A really lovely story about revenge, righting a wrong and finally getting a second chance with the one you are meant to be with.

Chance Meeting by Theresa Hodge:
A love at first sight story about Tessa and Scott, even though it takes them a while to get together. Her life was never the same after her chance meeting with him on a visit to New York. They only met briefly but the interaction between them stayed with her. It was a wonderful night which didn’t end how either of them had hoped. Did she have the courage to find him? I did find this author’s style of writing a bit hard to read and never connected with Tessa or Scott.

I currently have two short stories on the go, firstly the one I was working on last week but the second is a YA story for the Blackpool signing in August. I wouldn’t normally have two going at once but circumstances took over.

Last week I slipped down a few steps and have a lovely bruise on my leg and bruised ribs. As a result of this I struggled to sit at the computer to write so I spent some time platting away at the YA story.

Every genre has its own challenges and YA is one I have never tackled. As many of you know I tend to write darker subjects so writing a story where no one dies horribly provides its own set of challenges. I have written tamer stories for anthologies with very little spice or fade to black sex so that is less of an issue.

The main challenge is putting myself into the mind of a teenager, first life has changed a lot since I was one, and secondly although my son is a teenager is autism means that I can hardly pick his brain. The plot of the story is your basic boy meets girl, girl thinks boy is an idiot, boy does something heroic and girl decides to give him a go. I am setting the story in a riding school, which does mean I can pick the brains of the girls up at the stables where Preeya now lives, and Preeya, along with a couple of the girls may get name checks in there.

The first lot of questions I need to be asking is would a girl give their number to a guy now or their snapchat details? How long do they wait to respond to messages? When I was a teenager there were no mobile phones and dating was done mainly in school hours with the occasional meet up to go to the cinema at the weekend. I am not sure if it was because we had less freedom in some ways as teenagers or if it was simply that we hung around in crowds more.

Hopefully by next week I will have both stories finished and be back to writing novels, but I have a signing coming up so I am busy preparing for that at the minute too.

It has been a few weeks since I last wrote however, one project is finished and I have two books to add to promoting right now. I have moved on to another short story which will follow on and blend with the last one I finished.

The two stories put together will form the basis for the first book in a new series that you can expect to see next year, At this time I am undecided whether it will be a novella or if I rework and expand them into a full book, between them they will already be 25k so it’s not that big a stretch either way. I am determined to keep both this series and the paranormal creatures series to shorter books than normal fantasy, so probably aiming for 70-80k books rather than 100k plus which can be normal in that genre.

The part of the story I am writing right now, is part setting up background story, part folklore, and part if not mainly a love story. In so many stories, even if it not the main plot, there is a love story to be found. Think back to those old Westerns, at first you might say there is not love there, but the bond between the cowboy and his horse is a type of love, just like any other. Love or lack of it is often a motive for both the plot and the way the characters react in different situations.

In the story I am writing we have the classic tale of a mortal falling in love with an immortal, and she loves him in return but has her reasons for not sharing eternity with him immediately. In turn he questions her affections when she hesitates, if she truly loves him how can she risk his life as she play her role in changing the lands in which they live.

Nothing is every black and white, in fact it is in the nuanced shades of grey where most character live. And that is why they are so interesting! If you know the bad guy is pure evil, he will kill indiscriminately. That means everyone he comes across he potentially kills but what if then there is one he can’t kill, one that means more, that becomes more exciting.

Sometimes you find yourself taking on more than you can do, but them somehow you pull it off. That is me and anthologies!

When I sign up I do so thinking I have plenty of time, and to be fair I normally do. The problem is life does not always go along with my schedule, sometimes you find everything piling up on you and question why you do this to yourself.

So you might ask why do it? The fact is I love it and it makes marketing sense, especially if you are in there with authors with bigger audiences than your own. Sometimes it also pushes you out of your comfort zone, last year I wrote my first Christmas love story for one.

The short story I am witing this week is for the Authors At The Armouries signing and it also ties to the one I just finished for the Fiction, Fans & Ballgowns anthology. Both stories form the beginning of a fantasy series I plan to launch next year, once I get my rights back I will put both stories together and possibly extend them a little to make it into a novella.

The story for this anthology is back story on how the Raven Seer fell in love with the mortal Antonio. it wont be too in depth as it is only five thousand words but the plan is to make it steamy.

Hopefully by next week I will be onto something else as I have several projects on the go.

Finding The Right Apps!

Years ago I used Hootsuite to monitor my social media. While there was only FB and Twitter it worked okay but as more social media sprung up it no longer fit my needs. Then at a friends recommendation I tried Later.

Later works really well and I actually would happily keep using it but they recently hiked their prices up and as an Indie author who really doesn’t make enough to even buy a coffee most months I honestly cannot justify paying $40 a month (approx £36) I know it only works out at a pound a day but at a time we are all tightening our belts financially it is an expense I cant afford right now. Their free plan allows for 30 post per month and I may very well continue using it for Instagram for the reason I will explain in a minute.

Yesterday I took the time to go looking for a new social media management app and I found one called Planable. Right now I am trying the free version to decide if I like it but the version I would need will be $22 which is almost half of the price Later has gone up to and less than I was previously paying for it before the price increase.

Planable allows me to schedule posts to both my FB pages, my readers group, aw well as to Tiktok, Youtube, LinkedIn and Twitter. The one issue I have found is that I cannot schedule posts to Instagram, or rather I can but I have to the push the post to publish via a phone app. I have had to do this previously with other apps I have tried and to be honest it is a pain,

Will Planable be the answer to my needs I don’t know, only time will tell but which ever way it goes I will let you all know.

WIP Wednesday Week 9

This week is one of those crazy weeks where I am working on three projects. First, I have a short story to write for an anthology, this is a 15k love story and is set in New York and Cardiff. I can’t really say too much more about that other than it is part of an anthology for Indie love and it will be out in May, the cover release will be next month so I will tell you more about this project then.

The second is the edits on a previous short story I want to get those finished and submitted this week even though I do have a little longer. It is for the Books On The Beach 2022 anthology, I don’t have a set release date yet for this one, however, I expect it will be towards the end of July, I really loved this story, it came to me out of the blue and the one friend I have had read it says it deserves to be a full novel.

The final project underway this week is still Rosie, I struggled to get back into this one after setting it aside for so long so I don’t want to push it aside again. Instead I am doing half an hour each day keeping momentum going.

I am behind on where I wanted to be this year but I have also taken on a few extra anthology pieces which have inspired me and got my writing mojo back. I am hoping over the next few weeks I will get back on track.

The plus side is that I have a launch this week…

WIP Wednesday – Week 1 2022

This week I am writing mafia, sex, and violence! One of those things is new to me, yes the mafia part lol. I am in the process of finishing up a piece for an anthology. The problem with short stories is that as you create them, you find they take on a life of their own demanding they become a full fledged novel at the very least. So while the short story will be complete in it’s arc these characters will most likely be back at some point in the future.

To research this story I have to say google has been my friend and my enemy, do you know how many hours you can lose doing a google search for gang tattoos…

I can’t show you all the images I saved for inspiration, you will learn about some of them at a later date, if the story makes it to a full book or more.

I also have harassed my friend Jakab for knowledge of his homeland, and I won’t lie his voice inspired my main character Cezar, I swear he sounds just like an 80’s Bond villain. When deciding to write a mafia story I was determined I didn’t want to do Italian Mafia or Russian Bratva, so instead I decided to go with Romanian.

Straight away I hit a snag as most Romanian gangs tended to be more street gangs without a larger infrastructure, however, I got around this by Cezar having being trained and having links to the Bratva. His life, upbringing and parentage are all things that will come into play if the story makes it to a full book or series.

New Year’s Day = Resolutions!

It is January the first and of course that means that it is time to make a load of resolutions in the hope that we will at least keep one or two. This year however I am doing things a little differently and breaking the year down into three month blocks, basically quarters.

The last few months of last year I switched from using my yearly planning ststem to using a three month Legend planner, this is the one I am using though I am sure others are available…

The link for this one is here. I did begin to find that slowly I was becoming more productive in the last few months so I am going to try this method again this year. So rather than a year of resolutions in one go you will get five at a time, some will continue through the year with smaller milestones.

Resolution One – Write every day!

This seems self explanatory, but previously I have set myself targets and then knowing that I cant hit it I have got disheartened, so this time around the target is only 500 words per day. I really do want to write a lot more than that each day, and to get everything out I want to this year I will need to average out 1500 to 2000 a day but by allowing myself those day where 500 words counts I won’t feel like a failure if I don’t manage more on a busy day.

Resolution Two – Publish Rosie

This book is a third written, it is planned, outlined and complete in my head I just need to get the words on paper and get it out. I have an anthology out next month that needs to be finished in the next week, then it is all systems blazing for this project. I am hoping this book will be out in time to take print copies to Telford in March and the exciting this is this will be my first full length romance.

Resolution Three – Publish Role Of The Dice

Like Rosie this book is planned, outlined and a third written, it even has chapters laid out for the rest of the book it just needs me to focus and get it done. While I would love to get this out for Telford I doubt I will get to a point where I have print copies available for both books. My only hope would be possibly to create a book plate so anyone who wants to buy it from Amazon when it comes out, the ones that can’t get to see my later in the year, can add it. The thing to remember is that you can always order print copies of my books, signed and personalised from Raven’s Rest Press which is the name I have given my print imprint.

Resolution Four – Keep up to date with all scheduled posts.

I pay for a service that allows me to schedule posts to FB, Twitter, Instagram etc and when I first got it I was really good at making sure I arranged for a few posts per day so that even on busy days I had a presence. Then after a while, I became disheartened with my writing, as a result I only posted sporadically. This year I am determined to keep on track. Just 30 minutes each day will enable me to keep up with it all and allow me to share more with my readers.

Resolution Five – Lose Weight

Instead of setting a goal for the year I am aiming to divide it up into more manageable sections. So first this first quarter I am aiming to lose 24lbs, this should be easier as you do tend to lose weight quite quickly at the start. I wasn’t sure if I should share my starting weight but I guess it will make me more accountable to myself if no one else. So my starting weight is 283lbs. I will check in on the first of each month as far as my resolutions go and let you know how it is going.
