NaNo is a NoNo

I know lots of you are gearing up for NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writers Month) and had I not been about to have surgery I would probably have signed up this year and given it a go.  Then I read this post by Ben Trube Novel Sprinting and thought you know what I like his point number 5.

I know a big draw of doing NaNo is the sense of community as you plough through those words and that is something that I cannot recreate but I have decided to do a New Year Writing Month in January where I will attempt my 50.000 words.  I hope that instead of the support of others writing alongside me that a few of you will cheer me on from the sidelines or maybe even decide to join me.  There won’t be a pretty badge for my blog (NeYeWriMo doesn’t have quite the same ring lol) or a certificate at the end only the satisfaction of attempting and hopefully succeeding.

I have a couple of months to decide what I will do with the month at the minute my choices would seem to be a] work on the rewrite of Queen of Ages, b] The second ghost stories collection, c] the first draft of the second book in the Queen of Ages trilogy, or d] given how well received Waiting was a foray towards horror.

I have so many different ideas constantly floating round my head I think this will be a good exercise for me on how to focus on one idea at a time

  1. This is a great post, Paula! Thanks for sharing the link as well. I want to have a go at NaNo this year. I always miss it and it’d be good to focus on this with other people. Do you have to write directly on to the site? Sorry, I should research this! 🙂

Hope you’re keeping well. Your writing plans all sound great. Maybe I should use the month to rework my first novel.

  2. Thanks for the kind mention and glad the post was helpful. I’ll definitely consider joining you in January 🙂 (got my NaNo from last year to continue as well as other projects).

  3. Good luck sweetheart. I can’t imagine trying to write one in a month. I’m scrambling to collect my thoughts to put something together in the next year. This whole writing thing is so new to me and I have so much to learn. The next step is a creative writing class. My dear I want you to know that you inspire me. You really do.

  4. I just read the other day that Lucy has signed up for it and it made me think about it – too much going on in November but just to try and write so much in a short time.
So I made a start and it took me three days to write 800 words by which time I decided maybe it was a short story, not a novel i was dealing with!(I guess I’m about a third of the way through the story already)
But January? Well at least that gives some thinking time. The trick of writing thousands of words a day is already knowing what you are writing about. Having to stop and think it up as you go is very slowing.

  5. Being there, done that. NaNo can be great, but it can also be extremely stressful (at least to me) up to the point of very bad back aches, of the paralyzing kind. I’m hoping that will not be the case this year.

  6. I’m attempting nano right now and have been perpetually behind. I do like how I try everyday so that’s something. At this rate I should be done by the end of Dec and mentally exhausted in January, if not completely brain zapped.
