I have a confession too make before I start this book review, Science Fiction is one of the few genres I would rather watch than read so picking up a book of this nature is a rare occasion. I was so glad I made the exception in this case and who knows I may even try a few more.
I literally read this in a day once I started I couldn’t put it down other for the hours when work forced me to. Reminescent of H.G Wells War of the Worlds this post-apocalyptic novella is captivatingly written. It is not merely a men vs monsters story (although in this case woman vs monster) it is also a tribute to motherhood. The question of how far a mother will go to save her family when all she loves is ripped from her grasp not only engages you it makes you question your own reactions. Nora is an everyday woman, she is a wife and mother, transformed into a warrior by circumstance, she is lucky however to have friends with useful qualifications. The premise behind the novella is equally fascinating, to awake one morning to find out your whole life has been a lie and the man laying next to you is not what you thought he was. It also embraces the freedoms we as humans strive so hard for, this is demonstrated best by the charcter of Joe. He should be the enemy but he is one of them but the desire to hold on to the life he lived as a human before drives him to aid Nora in her mission to free her son. The idea of these beings living among us in disguise is unsettling, and as with all good science fiction it is the possiblity of this as an alternative reality that really hooks you and causes you to do a slight double take at some of the shall we say stranger people you cross in daily life. I would recommend this book whole heartedly the writing is exceptional and the storyline thought provoking, my only criticism would be that it deserved to be a full novel, the author and the story both have the ability to top the bestsellers list.
